This year I’m keeping it simple with only four book-related New Year’s resolutions. I could come up with a bunch more, but I’m really trying to keep balance in my life and not overwhelm myself with perfectionism and obligation.
Here are my 2018 Book Resolutions.
Read 50 Books.
Every year on Goodreads, my goal is to read around 40-50 books. Some years I make it and some years I fall short by a few. I would love to be one of those people who can read 100 or more but I just don’t see that happening, I have lots of other interests and projects that take up my time. If I were a faster reader I think I could do it, but I’m just average.
Read my bookshelf.
I’m one of those people who loves to buy books to add to her collection. I definitely want to read them, but for one reason or another, they’ve been set aside until a later date. I end up buying more and reading those, going to the library or listening to audiobooks. So, because I want to proudly say “I’ve read all these books on my shelf!” my goal is to read the majority of books I already own, including ebooks. This will also save me some money (or at least I like to hope it will).
Finish writing my novel.
This isn’t related to reading, but it IS a book-related goal. I’ve written many novels but the current novel I’m working on has been a project for several years and has taken up so much space in my mind. I’d really love to (AT THE VERY LEAST) get Draft One finished so that I can start the rewriting/editing process. This project has been a huge obsession for me and every time I try to work on another project, I can’t because my mind keeps coming back to this one. It’s about time I finished it.
Read 30 Minutes a Day
I started reading at least 30 minutes a day this January, when I started #readuary . Readuary is basically just reading a little every day for the entire month, to get into the habit. This has really helped me return to reading when I have a lot of other stuff going on, which is something I often struggle with. Because I found this so helpful, I’m going to make it a goal to read at least 30 minutes every day this year. I know I’ll miss a few days, but the goal is just to keep myself reading. Sometimes I have a dry spell for a month or two, and that really interferes with my goals.
That’s it for my book-ish resolutions. I’d love to add more: post wrap-ups every month, make booktube videos again, get through my 2018 To Be Read list, etc. But I’m not going to put pressure on myself to do those. If I manage to do them, great! That’s just a bonus. If not, oh well. Reading should be about enjoyment and not obligation.
Here’s to 2018 being the best reading year yet!
Did you make any reading resolutions this year? If you did, I’d love to hear what they are!
